WHY PEOPLE LEAVE CHURCH?

 *WHY PEOPLE LEAVE CHURCH*

By: Evangelist Oluwole Olaleye

People leave church for many reasons, and often it’s a combination of personal, social, and spiritual factors. Understanding these reasons can help churches become more welcoming, supportive, and relevant. Here are some common causes:

 *Disconnection and Lack of Belonging*

Many leave because they don’t feel connected to the community. If people feel ignored, judged, or like outsiders, they may drift away. A church that doesn’t foster genuine relationships or inclusiveness can push people out.

 *Unmet Expectations*

People often join church with certain hopes—spiritual growth, support, meaningful worship. When those expectations aren’t met, disappointment sets in. If sermons, programs, or leadership don’t resonate, people may stop attending.

 *Hypocrisy and Leadership Failures*

Scandals, moral failures, or hypocrisy among church leaders can deeply hurt members’ trust. When those in leadership act contrary to their teachings, it can cause disillusionment and push people away.

 *Spiritual Doubts and Questions*

Some leave because they struggle with faith doubts or questions that go unaddressed. If a church is not open to honest conversations about struggles, people may feel their spiritual needs are unmet.

 *Life Changes and Busy Schedules*

Major life events—moving, job changes, marriage, or having children—can disrupt church attendance. Busy schedules and competing priorities sometimes make regular attendance difficult.

 *Feeling Judged or Condemned*

When people feel judged for their past, lifestyle, or doubts rather than accepted and loved, they often withdraw. A legalistic or overly critical environment can alienate those seeking grace.

 *Cultural or Generational Differences*

Some leave because they find the style, language, or cultural relevance of the church outdated or disconnected from their worldview, especially younger generations.

*Lack of Personal Growth or Challenge*

If the church doesn’t help people grow or challenge them to live out their faith actively, people may feel stagnant and leave for other spiritual communities or personal paths.
